BIOGRAFIA | PROFESSOR JOHAN GALTUNG
Professor Dr. Johan Galtung, Norueguês com 86 anos, é um mediador de conflitos e pioneiro nos estudos da paz. É conhecido mundialmente como fundador da disciplina académica “Estudos da Paz” e mentor no campo da mediação e da transformação de conflitos - tanto no âmbito teórico quanto prático. Galtung foi quem primeiro conceptualizou a questão do peacebuilding ou construção da paz, apelando à criação de sistemas que criem a paz sustentável. Dele são igualmente os conceitos de “violência estrutural” e “paz negativa” e “positiva”, que tanta influência tiveram em gerações sucessivas de investigadores que trabalham na área da pesquisa para a paz. Desempenhou um papel decisivo na mediação e prevenção da violência em 45 conflitos armados no mundo ao longo das quatro últimas décadas.
Johan Galtung é Doutor em Matemática e Sociologia. Recebeu dez títulos de Doutor Honoris Causa outorgados por diversas universidades e é Honorary Professor por outras quatro universidades. Fundou em 1958 o Instituto de Pesquisas da Paz em Oslo, e a revista pioneira na área de Estudos da Paz: Journal of Peace Research. Foi co-fundador do Nordic Intitute for Peace Research [NIFF] em 2000. É consultor de várias agências da ONU, professor e palestrante. Foi fundador (em 2000) e reitor da Universidade de Paz TRANSCEND, a primeira Universidade de Estudos da Paz online do mundo. É também fundador e director da TRANSCEND International, uma rede global sem fins lucrativos para a paz, desenvolvimento e o meio ambiente, fundada em 1993, com mais de 500 membros em mais de 70 países.

Friday, October 20th, University of Minho receives Professor Johan Galtung [founder of TRANSCEND: A Network for Peace, Development and Environment] for a Seminar organized by the Research Center in Political Science (CICP), titled: "Five Decades of Peace Research: Past and Future". The Seminar will have as Moderator Professor Maria do Céu Pinto Arena from the Research Center in Political Science (CICP) of University of Minho.
This event will take place at the Auditorium B2 (CP II) from 10:00 to 12:00.
BIOGRAPHY | PROFESSOR JOHAN GALTUNG
Professor Dr. Johan Galtung, 86 years old Norwegian, is a conflict mediator and pioneer in peace studies. He is known worldwide as the founder of the academic discipline "Peace Studies" and mentor in the field of mediation and conflict transformation - both in the theoretical and practical spheres. Galtung first conceptualized the question of peacebuilding, urging for the creation of systems that create sustainable peace. It is also the concepts of "structural violence" and "negative" and "positive" peace that have had so much influence on successive generations of researchers working in the field of peace research. Galtung has played a decisive role in mediating and preventing violence in 45 armed conflicts over the last four decades.
Johan Galtung holds a PhD in Mathematics and Sociology. He has received ten Doctor Honoris Causa degrees from several universities and is an Honorary Professor from four other universities. He founded in 1958 the Institute for Peace Research in Oslo and the pioneering magazine in the area of Peace Studies: Journal of Peace Research. He was co-founder of the Nordic Institute for Peace Research (NIFF) in 2000. He is a consultant to several UN agencies and a lecturer. He was the founder (in 2000) and rector of the University of Peace TRANSCEND, the first University of Peace Studies online . He is also founder and director of TRANSCEND International, a global non-profit network for peace, development and environmental, founded in 1993 with more than 500 members in more than 70 countries.
